A pair of English ormolu and porcelain-mounted, parcel-gilt, satinwood and marquetry side-cabinets
Third quarter 19th century
Each with arched pediment with floral cresting flanked by carved finials and strapwork panels, with two mirrored-back shelves joined by fluted columns with leafy capitals, the breakfront top with border carved with alternating butterflies, moths, dragonflies and scrolls, the frieze inlaid with flowers, above a panelled door inset with an oval porcelain plaque painted with a music-making muse, flanked at each corner by ivory spandrels carved with foliage within a strapwork-inlaid border, the curved sides with mirrored-back shelves, above three panels carved with scrolling foliage and masks, the central panel fitted as a drawer, on moulded plinth

Lot Essay

From the mid-Victorian era numerous noteworthy English cabinet-makers such as Holland & Sons, Wright & Mansfield and Hindley & Wilkinson responded to a revival for fine French furniture by producing exquisitely crafted pieces in the French taste. The detail of the carving and quality of construction of this pair of Louis XVI style side-cabinets is typical of the very best English craftsmanship. The porcelain panels of Menade danzante are after engravings from the popularly reproduced Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte (The Antiquities of Herculaneum), Accademia Ercolanese, Naples, 1755-1792.
