Lot Essay

One of Amorsolo's favorite subjects was the female nude. During his brief period of intensive study in Spain he produced many drawings and paintings of the nude and even copied the celebrated 'Maja Desnuda' of Francisco Goya at the Prado Museum in Madrid. In later years Amorsolo continued to look to the female body for inspiration, making creative notes using oil on canvas. In these depictions of the nude, there is always a gentleness in the posture. The quality of his lines exhude an element of grace so apt for the subject. (A.R. Roces, Amorsolo, Hong Kong, 1975, p. 154)
