Lot Essay

Born in the Baltic Port of Memel, Arthur Waagen (d.1898) pursued his career as a sculptor in Paris, where he was inspired by the fashion for the Oriental. Renowned for his fine and realistic modelling, Waagen produced a series of sculpture with a North African flavour.
