Lot Essay

On the left screen (bottom image), fishing nets are set out to dry and boats are at anchor by the shore. On the right screen are scenes of Chinese rice planting and cultivation, a traditional East Asian subject favored by Kano-school painters and by the shogunal government of medieval Japan. Images of abundant harvests produced by hard-working subjects implied secure conditions provided by the ruler.
