Lot Essay

This is the right half of a pair of screens. It illustrates six scenes from the eleventh-century novel, The Tale of Genji, separated from one another by golden clouds, sometimes called "Genji clouds" (Genjigumo). Chapter 1, "The Paulownia Court," is at top center, Chapter 4, "Evening Faces" is at the top right, and Chapter 6, "The Safflower," is at the top left.
