Arita Ware, Edo period (late 17th century)
The first circular set on a shallow ring foot and decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with two confronted long-tailed birds around the rim, framed by scrolling vines, underside painted with fruiting vines, the rim glazed in brown iron oxide, three spur marks; the second with a foliate rim and molded around the sides in the interior with jewel-shaped roundels containing precious emblems and scrolling vines, the center painted in underglaze blue with two scholars by a waterfall and pine trees, the rim glazed in iron oxide, underside with leaf bands and three dots, stylized kin mark and four spur marks on foot
