A Four-Case Ritsuo-Style Lacquer Inro**
Edo period (19th century)
Designed with a caparisoned elephant lacquered in brown and gold takamaki-e, the animal's blanket with details in gold and red hiramaki-e and the trappings on the head red lacquer and mother-of-pearl with inlaid glass, the elephant's eyes also inlaid glass, the reverse decorated with a Chinese inscription in gold lacquer meaning the arrival of an elephant portends good luck, the surrounding area russet-colored lacquer simulating bronze, the interiors roiro nuri; fitted with a mixed-metal ojime cast as an elephant and an ivory netsuke carved as an elephant and trainer, with signature Shashin Tomochika
