A Lacquer Writing Box and Matching Writing Table
Edo period (19th century)
Each designed in gold and silver takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, togidashi with kirigane, uchikomi, kinpun, ginpun and mura-nashiji embellishments against a roiro-nuri ground; the rectangular writing box with rounded edges and fitted with silver rims and decorated on the exterior with a scene of pine and cherry trees beside a stream, the sides with a continuation of the design, the underside of the cover decorated with maple trees and a waterfall and rushing river, the interior of the box with young pines by a stream, fitted with a removable frame and tray and inkstone with the edges lacquered fundame, a silver maple-leaf waterdropper with gilt and enamel highlights and an inkstick holder, paper knife, two writing brushes and a paper pricker, all lacquered to match the writing box; the low writing table decorated with pine trees and cherry trees on a rocky landscape with a wide meandering river, young pines on distant rolling hills; fitted with silver hardware carved with foliate scroll; on four bracket feet, underside nashiji
