A Dutch-engraved façon de Venise serpent-stemmed dated matrimonial goblet
THE GLASS CIRCA 1650, THE ENGRAVING CIRCA 1709
The funnel bowl with the crowned coat-of-arms accolées surrounded by scrollwork and flower-branches and with a banderolle inscribed GETROUT DEN 8en OCTOBr 1709 (Married on 8 October 1709), the reverse with a snake in the form of a medallion biting its own tail enclosing a dove with an olive branch, flanked by branches and above a banderole inscribed AD MULTOS ANNOS (For many years), between borders of scrolling branch motifs with two grotesque masks, on an elaborately coiled symmetrical stem enclosing yellow, red and blue threads, applied with blue pincered ornaments (repaired fragment ca. 3 x 3 cm. to the upper border)
