A Dutch engraved dated 'Patriotten' goblet
CIRCA 1795
The funnel bowl with a rearing stallion on a sward suspending beaded swags, with small polished details, beneath the inscription DE VRYHYD GELYKHYD EN BROEDERSCHAP A 1795 (The liberty, equality and fraternity), the balustroid stem enclosing tears, on slightly conical foot (one small chip ca. 0.5 cm. wide to the foot)

Please note that this goblet was probably engraved by Jacob Sang, circa 1780, including the inscription 'DE VRYHYD', the inscription 'GELYKHYD EN BROEDERSCHAP A 1795' was added when the Dutch United Provinces were invaded by the French in 1795.

Lot Essay

These goblets were commissioned to commemorate the uprising of the 'patriotten' movement during the turbulent times when the Republic of the Dutch United Provinces was invaded by the French in 1795. The 'patriots' were in favour of the ideals of the French Revolution and accordingly collaborated with the French in establishing the Bataafse Republiek (1795-1806). The stadholders of the House of Orange subsequently had to leave the country and returned in 1813 when Willem I was established as the first Dutch constitutional monarch.
