ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY: THE BEAUTIFUL
The Robert Mondavi Winery is globally recognized as an innovative leader throughout the wine industry. Its technological advances have spanned from cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks to partnering with NASA in aerial observation of its vines. At the same time, the winery has remained committed to its socially responsible practices of natural farming and gentle winemaking techniques by limiting chemical use.
Winemaker and enologist Genevieve Janssens regularly tastes each new Robert Mondavi project with her team and collaborates with the winegrowers to obtain the perfect blend, reflecting both the Robert Mondavi tradition and her own vision.
HISTORIC TO-KALON VINEYARD
Pioneer viticulturist H.W. Crabb first planted this vineyard in 1868 and named it "To Kalon," which means the beautiful in Greek.
By 1978, Robert Mondavi had acquired 250 acres of Crabb's historic 359 acre vineyard. The remaining acres are owned by vine grower Beckstoffer Vineyards (89 acres) and UC Davis (20 acres).
Located in the Oakville American Viticultural Area, at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain range, To Kalon experiences warm daytime temperatures tempered by the morning and evening fog influence from the Pacific Ocean. The region's bale clay loam, alluvial soils provide excellent drainage, and develop deep rooting grapevines.
Vines in the Mondavi portion of To Kalon vineyard range anywhere from new plantings to vines planted in 1945, which account for some of the valley's oldest vines. Currently, the vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, though additional varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petite Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. To Kalon is home to Mondavi's cherished I-Block, Marjorie's Sunrise, Marjorie's Twilight, Monastery, and many of their very best vineyard blocks.
The following lot originates from a special offering from the Mondavi Winery at the Napa Valley Vintner's Auction 1993. The lot description was a 1/2 barrel of the 1992 To-Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon which to this date has never before been offered commercially. Our client was granted the opportunity to bottle the lot to his specifications. There exists only six impérials of the 1992 Mondavi, To-Kalon Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon, three of these impérials are on offer below, the remaining three are in private hands.
