VINTAGE 1969 *****

I think it took a little time to realize that this was by far the finest of the unusually good trio: 69, 70, 71, and I suspect that the claret lovers, only too aware of the scraggy and tart red Bordeaux, half-dismissed the '69 burgundies, though it happens to be the excellent acidity which made, and has sustained these wines.

The growing season opened with a cold, rainy spring, followed by late flowering which was happily countered by very fine ripening weather in July and August. This enabled well-developed grapes to survive a cold, wet September and, in exceptionally good weather, produce from 5 October a small sound, ripe crop.

La Tâche--Vintage 1969
Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Level: 7cm; broken wax capsule top, serial number 15
"At Manfred Wagner's La Tâche vertical in 1998, it had an open, mature colour; its nose initially showing its age but soon opening up very fragrantly, with hints of tea, and strawberries; medium-sweet, full, rich, lovely texture and delicious flavour, firm, dry, still tannic. (Aubert de Villaine told us that La Tâche suffered from hail in July just before vérasion which reduced the crop.) Most recently a magnum, immediately preceding bottles of the '61, at Len Evans' 'Single-bottle club' dinner: a very good color; a perfectly harmonious bouquet with, I thought, a whiff of vanilla; glorious flavour, fragrant aftertaste. Perfection. Last tasted Sept 2001 ***** At its summit but still with years of life." MB, Vintage Wine
