TWO EXCEEDINGLY RARE BOTTLES OF
1919 LE GRAND MUSIGNY
FROM THE VENERATED COMTE DE VOGÜÉ DOMAINE
A MICHAEL BROADBENT 5-STAR WINE!
DOMAINE COMTE GEORGES de VOGÜÉ
HISTORY
This great Burgundy domaine stems from year 1450 when Jean Moisson endowed money for a chapel to be built in his native village. Under the protection of Cardinal Rolin, son of Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins, this chapel eventually became the parish church of Chambolle. In 1766, the year Christie's was established incidently, Catherine Bouhier de Versalieu married Cerice François Melchior de Vogüé, eldest son of a nobel family from the Rhône Valley. The late Comte Georges de Vogüé began his stewardship of this magnificent property in 1925 and fortified the domaine's history for the next 50 plus years. The estate is clearly recognized as perhaps the second most important red wine domaine in all of the Côte d'Or, only the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti precedes it in prestige. The Domaine owns the choicest portions of Musigny -- including the totality of Les Petits Musigny -- an amazing 7/10 of the entire appellation! Add to this 1/5 of Bonnes Mares the only other Grand Cru in the commune. Presently, the vines average over 30 years old, and up to 40 years old in parts of Le Musigny, this cuvée is therefore sold exclusively as Vieilles Vignes.
Musigny Vieilles Vignes, Comte Georges de Vogüé is a wine of legendary delicacy, perfume, complexity and beauty, with Bonnes-Mares being usually more structured, often requiring even more years to reach its peak.
The present head of the family is Elisabeth, Baroness de Ladoucette, the 19th generation to own the property and the only daughter of the late Comte Georges de Vogüé who passed in 1987. A dynamic team then took over the management, consisting of vineyard-manager Eric Bourgogne, cellar-master Francois Millet and sales director Jean-Luc Pépin.

The current lot was purchased on 3 December 1998 at our Christie's London saleroom. The sale opened with a collection titled: A MAGNIFICENT CHATEAU CELLAR; the collection was inspected by two Christie's employees, one of which is still with us and has verified the provenance and buyer, our consignor, of the original lot. According to the original catalogue description these wines had lain undisturbed in a French château cellar since original purchase by the owner's grandfather in the early part of the last century. The totality of the original collection offered for sale came to 150 lots and showcased multiple lots of 1905 Latour & Gruaud-Larose, 1914 Margaux & Pichon-Lalande, 1921 Latour, Haut Brion & Cheval Blanc; great burgundies included 1911 Clos Vougeot (Liger-Belair), 1935 Puligny Montrachet (Domaine Leflaive), and of course late 19th century vintage Fine Champagne Extra Cognac.
