DOMAINE DU VIEUX TÉLÉGRAPHE
The astounding Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is one of the few large Châteauneuf du Pape estates with nearly all of its acrage under one contiguous plot of land. It sits upon a gently-sloping plateau on which the inventor of the optical telegraph erected one of his relay towers. The original relay tower's construction was in 1792 and while its physical representation is long since gone, the name remains (even though it was nearly lost by contract to Louis Reynaud of Château Rayas fame). Presently, the domaine's guiding principal is that you have no business making wine from sub-standard grapes. Since their father's death in 1988 brothers, Daniel and Frédéric Brunier, have taken the helm (their tenure began in the early 1980s) and guided this venerable estate into the a new millennium. The vines are an average age of 50 years old, with some even older. The quality produced from these old vines ensures that concentration and ripeness of the grapes achieve the brothers' foremost principal of 'no sub-standard grapes'. Vieux Télégraphe red is a selection of the best wine, a second wine however is made from grapes not up to the grand vin quality. This process of selection starts during the vintage and may not be finalized until a year later. As such, it is the Bruniers collective and unwavering philosophy that no cuvée spéciale be produced at the domaine. Vieux Télégraph is their cuvée spéciale!
