Lot Essay

Many of Star Trek's alien cultures required some sort of graphics, symbols, or writing. Because they were, after all, alien, they had to look a little strange to our human eyes. Spacefaring cultures sometimes also needed technical graphics, such as control panels or display screens. In Star Trek: Insurrection, the Bak'u people's writing was inspired by Earth's ancient cuneiform symbols. Since the Son'a people were originally part of the Bak'u, the writing on their control panels was designed as a modernized version of Bak'u text. This made perfect sense until someone noticed that one of the symbols on these control panels looked a little like the character Zorak in Cartoon Planet's Space Ghost, Coast to Coast. The similarity was unintentional, but some wags in the art department started to refer to it as "the mark of Zorak."
