The tricorder has evolved over the years. During The Original Series, they were about the size of a hardback book. Rick Sternbach made them much smaller for Star Trek: The Next Generation's first season. Over the years, they grew even sleeker as technology presumably continued to advance. These props represent the latest in Starfleet science hardware.
