We first met the Romulans in "Balance of Terror" in Star Trek: The Original Series in 1966. In it, Romulan military uniforms, designed by William Ware Theiss, had an unusual textured pattern that almost resembled checkering. Theiss echoed this design two decades later, in 1988, when Romulans returned in "The Neutral Zone". In Star Trek: Nemesis, costume designer Bob Ringwood further evolved this motif with his wardrobe for Romulan military officers and members of the Romulan senate.
