Foam latex makeup appliances are inherently fragile, and are frequently damaged while worn by an actor. Afterwards, removal can further damage an appliance, frequently destroying it, and the foam itself deteriorates with time. As a result, few finished examples of Star Trek's alien makeup appliances have survived, and even fewer are fully painted.
