Control panels on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation were mostly made with high-contrast sheet film on acrylic plastic sheets. Color was applied with hand-cut pieces of theatrical lighting gel. The process was surprisingly fast and relatively easy to produce, and yielded excellent-looking results. Control panels made with this technique tend to have richer color, better detail, superior opacity, and are often more fade-resistant than panels made for later shows using inkjet output.
