Paramount assigned three large soundstages for the production of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Even so, there were many occasions when a little (or a lot of) extra space was needed. One relatively easy way to provide such space was by the use of large backlit photographic transparencies. When hung outside a window or at the end of a corridor, they helped create the illusion of a much larger space than actually existed on stage.
