The name "Ferengi" was derived from an Arabic term for outsiders, sometimes used to describe Western or European traders. Prior to playing Quark, Shimmerman played Letek, one of the original Ferengi in "The Last Outpost" in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and he also played the face of the gift box in "Haven" in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
