Several Star Trek episodes and movies have referred to a terrible third world war, which devastated our civilization during the 21st century. Little is known about this conflict, although Star Trek: First Contact established that it was over just prior to Zefram Cochrane's first warp flight. Q's first appearances in "Encounter at Farpoint" in Star Trek: The Next Generation featured a costume, which he said dated back to the "post-atomic horror," presumably referring to the aftermath of World War III. Although a 21st century nuclear conflict is something we all hope to avoid, these emblems remain a fascinating glimpse of a little-known piece of Star Trek history.
