Four small circular brass pins, all joined on a common back piece, denoting the rank of Captain in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the back piece was used to maintain proper spacing of the pips when worn on the collar -- believed to have been worn by Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation (4)

Lot Essay

In designing the Star Trek: The Next Generation versions of the Starfleet uniforms, William Ware Theiss wanted to be less overt with indications of rank than he had been with his Original Series costumes. Still, he knew that rank designations were important. His solution was the use of discreet "pips," placed on the collar, where they would be highly visible, despite their small size.
