Ensign Ro Laren, played by Michelle Forbes, was a Starfleet officer from planet Bajor. She grew to feel that Starfleet was not doing enough to free her people from Cardassian oppression, so she joined the Maquis resistance group. At one point, Star Trek's producers had planned to transfer Ensign Ro to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, for the role that eventually became Major Kira Nerys.
