In early 1987, when Gene Roddenberry first announced that a Klingon officer would serve on the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, many fans were outraged. They wondered how an evil Klingon could be trusted on the flagship of the Federation. Of course, Roddenberry was hoping to get exactly this reaction. He wanted to remind fans that there are no permanent enemies, that today's adversaries can become tomorrow's trusted allies, even friends.
