Prior to serving on the Enterprise-D, Miles O'Brien served aboard the Starship Rutledge under Captain Ben Maxwell. While a member of the Rutledge crew, he survived the bloody Cardassian attack at Setlik III, but harbored deep bitterness against the Cardassians for years, as we saw in "The Wounded" in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
