The Voyager "memory wall" was intended as one of the centerpieces of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It was planned for use in an elaborate sequence in which Kirk and Spock spacewalk through Voyager. Spock mind-melded with a "memory crystal" to learn about Voyager. The sequence was filmed, with the on-set technical assistance of Apollo astronaut (and real-life spacewalker) Russell Schweikart. Unfortunately, technical problems later forced the scene to be rewritten and re-shot in simplified form.
