Visual effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull was responsible for the mind-blowing "slit scan" corridor-of-light effects in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. For Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Trumbull devised a digitally-controlled version of his slit scan rig, which he used to create the dimensional cloud that surrounded V'Ger.
