Nichelle Nichols takes great pride in her role as Uhura, for being one of the most visible African American performers on television during the 1960s. At one point, Nichols had considered leaving Star Trek because her role was relatively small. She changed her mind after being admonished by Dr. Martin Luther King. Dr. King reminded Nichols of the importance of showing that people of color will play a part in the world of tomorrow.
