When Pavel Chekov joined the Star Trek cast in 1967, the Cold War between the United States and Russia was still going strong. When Gene Roddenberry added the Russian ensign to the bridge crew, it was as powerful a statement for peace as, two decades later, adding a Klingon warrior to the crew of Picard's ship would be.
