Lot Essay

Wood toy trains from the 19th century are rare although they do appear in German toy Masterbooks of the 1860s. There is a simple wood train in the London Museum, but without the decoration of this one. Rock and Graner's catalogues of the 1870s show similar designed trains but these, of course, are painted tinplate.
