A rare pair of French carton-headed seaside dolls
with brown hair wigs, large painted brown eyes, single 'stitched' eyebrows, lashes of the man vertical, the woman's diagonal, the hands of carved wood, the bodies covered in original shell costumes of an open robe edged with mother of pearl shells, her bodice with serratted shells at the wrists simulating lace cuffs, her buslin bonnet surmounted by a garland of artificial flowers, he with short jacket edged with serratted shells, waistcoat and full knee breeches of mother of pearl shells, his painted wood legs with powdered shell 'clocks', circa 1790 --12¼in. (31cm.) high (some damage to shells, missing on womans back, bossom repainted and her skirt replaced back to front); in lined glazed case (2)
