In the form of Minerva, Goddess of War, holding a spear and shield, the shield with a circular dial with Roman chapters, the hands issuing from a central Medusa mask, on a rectangular rouge marble base with leaf-tip-cast ormolu plinth

A closely related clock attributed to Gérard-Jean Galle, with figure of Minerva, Goddess of War, the movement also incorporated in her shield, is in the château de Malmaison (illustrated in B. Chevallier et al., Napoleon, exh. cat., Memphis, 1993, cat. 56. p. 71). Two other Minerva clocks in the Spanish Royal collection are illustrated in J. Ramon Colon de Carvajal, Catalogo de Relojes del Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid, 1987, cat. 165, p.185, and cat. 229, p. 245, while a further clock of this model is illustrated in L. Montanes, Catalogo del Museo de Relojes de las Bodegas, Jerez de la Frontera, n.d., p. 38. A virtually identical clock was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 22 October 2003, lot 180.
