Despite the discrepancy in spelling, the label on this table possibly refers to Archibald Philip, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929), who famously, but apocryphally, is said to have boasted while at Eton that his three ambitions in life were to become Prime Minister, win the Derby and marry a Rothschild. In 1878 he did indeed marry a Rothschild, Hannah, who four years earlier had become the richest heiress in England when her father Baron Mayer died, leaving her a fortune of over £2 million and Mentmore, the legendary treasure house whose contents were sold in 1977 in one of the most celebrated sale of the 20th Century.
