THE CARCASE SECOND HALF 18TH CENTURY, THE PARQUETRY VENEERS OF A LATER DATE
The circular top inlaid with trellis parquetry within a flowerhead-filled guilloche surround, above a panelled frieze inlaid with further trellis, on fluted pilaster supports headed by square paterae and a conformingly inlaid undertier with pierced gallery, on tapering turned legs ending in sabots, inscribed '47' in black ink to drawer, with blue bordered paper label inscribed in black ink 'S17' and with paper label inscribed in ink 'Lord Roseberry Billiard Room'

Lot Essay

Despite the discrepancy in spelling, the label on this table possibly refers to Archibald Philip, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929), who famously, but apocryphally, is said to have boasted while at Eton that his three ambitions in life were to become Prime Minister, win the Derby and marry a Rothschild. In 1878 he did indeed marry a Rothschild, Hannah, who four years earlier had become the richest heiress in England when her father Baron Mayer died, leaving her a fortune of over £2 million and Mentmore, the legendary treasure house whose contents were sold in 1977 in one of the most celebrated sale of the 20th Century.
