The sophisticated à l'anglaise form of this commode, the central drawers taken from a 17th century Japanese lacquer cabinet, is typical of the innovative luxury wares supplied by the marchand mercier Dominique Daguerre, often to English clients such as George, Prince of Wales (later George IV), whose sumptuous London residence Carlton House was extensively furnished by Daguerre, including a number of pieces by Weisweiler, often incorporating precious lacquers.
A closely related commode, of the full à l'anglaise form with open shelves to the sides, was supplied by Daguerre to Earl Spencer for use at Spencer House (illustrated in F.J.B. Watson, Louis XVI Furniture, London, 1973, cat. 149).
