Lot Essay

Although the construction of these flamboyant chairs is typically Italian, the exaggerated profile of the legs and back, unusual for Italian seat furniture, may point to a Spanish origin. A console with similarly exaggerated profile to the legs, combined with similar low relief-carved foliate ornament and large scale apron, in the Sacristy of the Comendadoras, Madrid, is illustrated in L. Feduchi, Spanish Furniture, Barcelona, 1969, p. 178, fig. 156.
