This painter is Picasso, but at the same time also all painters since painting began, or at least those he kept by his side, looking over his shoulder. (Célestine and her recurrence in the work of Picasso, Pierre Daix, D. Imbert Fine Art, Paris, 1988, p. 60) The artist and his model is one of the major narrative themes of the 347. A version of the eternal lovers' duet, the relationship here is of an existential nature: the artist is our translator of reality, the model is reality itself. Contrary to his classical portrayals of this relationship in La Suite Vollard, in La Séries 347 Picasso shows the ageing artist with more self-derision. Often portrayed as Rembrandt, he is accompanied by fellow musketeers who together appear to have just stepped from The Night Watch.
