Some focus solely on the fashionable, some on rarity and vintage quality alone and some with a slavish, and relatively recently acquired, regard for 'points'. This 558-lot collection has been put together over a considerable number of years with a particular dual focus in mind - quality and value. The bulk of the lots reflect the traditional tastes of the owner who, with skilled guidance, has amassed this impressive cellar with a view to mostly current or medium term consumption. A change of circumstances now means that a large part of the entire collection is offered here for auction, giving bidders the opportunity to acquire a wide selection of chateaux and estates, either for drinking now or cellaring into the next decade, some beyond. The Vintage Port spans the period from the stylish and attractive Fonseca 1966 right up to Fonseca and Warre of 2000. Bordeaux, unsurprisingly forming a large majority of the cellar, is represented by every desirable drinking vintage of the golden period 1970 to 2001, plus an especially fine selection of the recently-shipped 2003 vintage. Chateaux are a roll-call of the familiar from First-Growths to leading Crus Bourgeois and 'Second Wines'. A little 2001 Sauternes leads us into white Burgundies from Coche-Dury and Boillot. The sale concludes with fine Rhone, Cahors, Loire, Tuscany and Napa Valley selections.
