FIRST EDITION OF 'THIS FINE SERIES OF VIEWS ... issued separately nine years before the official account of H. Bougainville's voyage was published' (Hill), including fine views of Singapore, the Philippines, the Bourbon Islands in the Pacific, Australia, Brazil and Argentina. The son of Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811) who had circumnavigated the world in 1766-1779, French naval officer Hyacinthe de Bougainville set sail from France in March 1824 with the ships Thétis and L'Espérance on a diplomatic mission to Réunion, Cochin-China, Pondicherry in the Indian Ocean, Manila and Macao. He returned across the Pacific, retracing his father's previous circumnavigation and, after anchoring at Port Jackson for three months, returned to France via Rio.
