THOMAS EDWARD LAWRENCE (1888-1935)

Two autograph letters signed ('T.E. Shaw') to H.W. Bailey (at The Dairy, Berkeley), Clouds Hill, 17 August 1925, 1½ pages, 8vo, and 14 Barton Street, London SW1, n.d., one page, 4to, autograph envelope (postmarked Cranwell, 30 October 1926).

'MY ARABIA YARN' -- A REFERENCE TO SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM. 'Soon after Xmas [1925] I'm sending free copies of my Arabian yarn to the fellows who helped in the business'. In the second letter, asking Bailey to confirm his address, Lawrence writes that Bailey will have the book in a month's time while he himself is 'In RAF now: but am going to India on Dec.5'.

Lawrence had intended to give away copies of Seven Pillars to all those who had served with him in Arabia, but the delays in the final stages of the production of the subscribers' edition meant that it was long overdue, and finally ready for distribution only at the end of 1926, when there were not enough copies to go round. Some of those given away were imperfect. The copies reserved for the subscribers were meanwhile sent to various binderies to be lavishly bound in different styles. Lawrence had selected his second alias, 'T.E. Shaw', on enlisting in the Tank Corps in 1923, picking it as the first one syllable name which he spotted on opening the Army List at random (J. Wilson, Lawrence of Arabia (1989), page 710).

For the copy of The Seven Pillars of Wisdom sent to Herbert Wilson Bailey, see lot 118. (2)
