THE PROPERTY OF THE FRAM MUSEUM, OSLO (Lots 139-143) Wladimir Goichman was born in Odessa in 1903. He worked as a surgeon, specializing in brain surgery. During World War II Goichman served under Marshal Zukov as a field surgeon, until the very end of the war in Berlin in 1945. In 1934-1935, Goichman took part, as a doctor and research assistant, in the third expedition of the Russian Polar regions. He began exploring the Arctic landscape, which was to become the main theme of his later production. Goichman made his oil paintings out in the open or on the deck of a research vessel. Altogether, Goichman painted more than 300 Arctic landscapes. These five paintings are part of the a group of 60 that were donated to the Fram Museum in Oslo in recognition of Fridtjof Nansen's humanitarian efforts in Russia. His paintings have been exhibited all over Europe, including at the Royal Geographical Society, London in 1996. They are on permanent display at the Arctic Museum Nanoq on Greenland. Wladimir Goichman died in 2001.
