Lot Essay

Franz Josef Land was discovered by the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition in 1873. Led by Karl Weyprecht and Julius von Payer, the expedition's ship was abandoned in the pack-ice at Franz Josef Land as they were looking for a north east passage. The expedition then took sledges to go further north to open water, and used boats to reach the Black Cape of Novaya Zemlya. The archipelago was named for the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph.
