Lot Essay

An important album of Hurley's photographs given to his friend and key sponsor, Janet Stancomb Wills (for whom he named one of the three boats after the Endurance sank in 1915). There were hitherto just 5 other copies recorded of this 'de-luxe' album by Hurley ('Five albums are reputed to have been made. Hurley took one in a taxi to Buckingham Palace' J.Piggott (ed.), Shackleton, The Antarctic and Endurance, Dulwich, 2000, p.129), one reportedly in the Royal Collection, two at Dulwich College, the present Stancomb-Wills and the Hussey copy (the latter Christie's, 23 Sept. 2004, lot 218). The Houlder copy which was sold at Christie's, 21 Sept. 2005, lot 383, a fine coloured and unrecorded copy, and presented to another supporter, revised the tally to 6.
