Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1875
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Recorked at the Château in 1981. Level base of neck
Tasting Note: Over a dozen notes, all except one emanating from Sir George Meyrick's cellars. All had lead capsules embossed Lafite and a very distinctive oval shoulder label 'Geo Claridge 24 Rood Lane London' with, in the centre, '240'..My first note (in May 1970), was made in the Meyrick cellar at Hinton Admiral: lovely colour, 'faded but alive and interesting' A month later I opened a bottle in my office to taste with the late Jack Rutherford, the Cruse agent and one of England's finest palates. Given the wine blind he unhesitatingly identified it. It was lovely, mellow-looking; a faded old lady when first poured but a bouquet that developed richly, with the gingery wholemeal biscuit scent often emitted by the finest mature clarets. A soft, gentle style, silky textured and very rich. Delightful. A lovely drink. Another Meyrick bottle at the Overton tasting in 1979 was rather drab, its initial banana skin nose recovering, a rich raisiny fruitiness remaining after four hours..Last noted in the pre-phylloxera 'flight' at Rodenstock's tasting, Sept 1995. At its best still ***** M.B.
