Josiah Percy Stevens founded the J.P. Stevens Watch Co. in 1882 in Atlanta, Georgia after purchasing a portion of the Springfield Watch Co. and watch parts from the Bowman watch factory. During the brief five year lifespan of the company J.P. Stevens produced a total of approximately 169 watches, though the name would continue to be used on other productions.

Though recased, the present rare example is one of the original models which included Stevens' patented regulator.
