Lot Essay

Seikosha, later renamed Seiko, was one of two Japanese watch manufacturers during World War II whose name was synonymous with the production of military timepieces. These horological pieces, like the pilot's wristwatch seen here, were not commissioned by the Japanese military but rather were purchased privately by individials working for the Japanese armed forces, hence explaining their rarity. This example, with its long straps and large crown, enabled pilots not only to secure the piece over a flying jacket but also enabled them to advance the watch while still wearing a pair of flying gloves.
