Diamonds have been awarded a coveted role amongst collectors and admirers alike. Created from carbon under titanic pressure and enormous heat, deep within the Earth, diamonds are one of nature's most mysterious wonders. Symbolizing love, wealth and power, they are known for their unparalled hardness and crystalline purity. But to properly appreciate important white crystals, one must first understand the rarity of finding large, rough diamonds.
Out of a total worldwide diamond production in excess of 100 million carats every year, the Gemological Institute of America estimates there are no more than 600 diamond crystals annually that finish as polished stones between one and two carats and that are D color. Above ten carats, this figure decreases dramatically.
Rough diamonds come in numerous shapes and colors and it is, therefore, the primary goal of every cutter to maximize yield in cutting. For instance, a rectangular-cut diamond over 50 carats needs to retain its elegant shape and very good polish but is only achieved by sacrificing a substantial amount of rough weight. Such a stone is truly rare. This 51.08 carat gem is, therefore, one of a very select group of such diamonds ever to be offered at auction. Elegantly mounted, it is sheer magnificence for the ultimate diamond connoisseur.
