Lot Essay

Warren Hastings (1732-1818), Governor-General of India was first painted in enamel on a Wedgwood plaque in 1791 by Stubbs. This print, was probably taken from that portrait, was published in April 1795 to celebrate the acquittal of Hastings from the charge of impeachment for "high crimes and misdemeanours" in Bengal.
