A fascinating record with skilfully drawn views of Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the 19th century. The Gentleman's Magazine recorded the marriage of Marina Norton in Rio in 1843, and it seems likely that she was the wife of Captain James Norton, frigate-captain during the Brazilian War of Independence (1821-5) - an English officer who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars with the Royal Navy and then served with the East India Company. Commodore Norton was recorded in Rio de Janeiro on 1845.
