This carpet was purchased in Paris in 1970 from Madame Arpels, from the famous jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels.

Lot Essay

A comparable carpet with an overall flowering peony design and outer swastika stripe but with a different inner stripe was exhibited recently in Cologne, (Hans König and Michael Franses, Glanz der Himmerlssöhne Kaiserliche Teppiche aus China 1400-1750, Exhibition catalogue, London, 2005, pp.76-77, pl.12).
